A double pole and a podium in race 1 saw the team have its best weekend of the season so far. Round 3 of the Engen VW Cup championship took place at the Aldo Scribante track in Port Elizabeth and the team was ready for the challenge. Round 2 of the Engen VW Cup championship took place at the Killarney track in Cape Town. The track is well known for its high speeds and close racing and with 35 cars entered it would certainly be tight out on the track. For the first time, the format would consist of 3 races instead of 2. With races 1 and 2, each 6 laps long, happening back-to-back with the cars lining up on the grid between races 1 and 2 instead of going back into the pits. Race 3 would be a 12 lap race. With Mark only driving the car for the first time the Saturday before the race meeting and having very few laps under his belt the team was apprehensive about how we would fair at the first event of the year. Our preparation was not helped when the team was issued with the wrong brake pads for the Friday practice sessions. Issues with the engine meant that we were 10% down on our required power leaving us very overweight. Even so, Mark still managed a sub 1 minute 16 second lap but was pipped by a very fast Mark du Toit by 0.2 seconds. Race 1 Both Mark and du Toit made good starts leaving Mark in 2nd place down the back straight. Mark not able to push du Toit and it stayed like this until the safety car came out on lap 3.
