GMS Racing’s Involvement in Engen Volkswagen Cup

GMS Racing will be competing in Engen Volkswagen Cup for the first time in 2012. The Q8 Oils sponsored Volkswagen Polo Cup Car will be driven by Mark Silverwood.

What is Engen Volkswagen Cup?

The Engen Volkswagen Cup series has become synonymous with one-make racing action. A field consisting of Volkswagen Polo Vivo race cars with similar power and racing pedigree all fighting for chequered flag honours is a recipe that has proved enduring and popular in South Africa.

The series has entertained motorsport fans for 15 years, starting originally with the Polo Classic sedans before moving to the hatchback model of the range. In its latest incarnation the series makes use of the Volkswagen Polo Vivo to provide maximum racing action.

Under the hood of these cars is a 2.0 litre Volkswagen engine and competitors have to follow strict rules as to what they can, and cannot, do to make the cars perform at their best. The single-make nature of the series is carefully controlled and drivers must rely on their racing skills – and their Continental racing tyres – to produce the fastest laptimes in the search for honours.

From 2011 the Engen Volkswagen Cup competitors found themselves under even tougher regulations with their racing engines now being sealed and these engines will be maintained by the technicians at Volkswagen Racing.
